SJR333 Homestead Exemption Amendment :: The role of the Hanover Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber is to identify and address issues of importance to the business community in Hanover County and the Greater Richmond region.  As such, the Council feels strongly that passage of Senate Joint Resolution No. 333, the Homestead Exemption Act, to amend the Constitution of Virginia authorizing the General Assembly to allow local governments to exempt from real property taxation twenty percent of the real value of owner occupied residential or the residential portion of farm properties would shift a disproportionate share of the overall tax burden to the businesses in the region.  In working to grow and retain businesses in our region, the Hanover Business Council believes it imperative the business community not shoulder this additional burden.  We have great concern that passage of the act will dampen business growth in the region and the state.

The Hanover Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber has adopted a resolution opposing Senate Joint Resolution No. 333.  We recognize that our state and local elected officials are asked to make many difficult choices affecting the prosperity of the region and quality of life of their constituents. However, we urge them to continue to recognize business growth as one of their priorities and strongly oppose this legislation.

The Hanover Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber, the Hanover Association of Businesses & Chamber of Commerce, and the Hanover County Department of Economic Development successfully introduced Hanover County’s newest state-of-the-art facility, the Hanover Center for Trades & Technology providing career and technical training to the business community on November 12, 2008.  More than 80 business, education and community leaders from across the county and region toured the new facility and learned about the educational experience and curriculum designed for achieving recognized industry standards for performance allowing students to master workforce readiness skills necessary to obtain employment or continue their education in the trades area.  The tour proved an invaluable way to connect the business community and their workforce needs to Hanover County’s newest school and its students.
