hereGRTC Recognition :: The Richmond Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber congratulates GRTC Transit System for being recognized by the American Public Transportation Association as the best of its size (4 million to 30 million rides annually) in the country. The business community recognizes the great service that GRTC provides to our community, and encourages Richmond City leadership to be supportive of initiatives that will enhance public transit and expand our system to be progressive and efficient. We applaud John Lewis and the entire GRTC team for this achievement.
Policy Positions:
Carytown Improvements :: The Richmond Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber applauds the city’s efforts to make improvements and enhancements in Carytown. Carytown, having been recently recognized by readers of Southern Living as one of the 10 best shopping neighborhoods, is an asset of business and culture in the City of Richmond and the business community appreciates the actions and efforts made by the Mayor, City Council, the participating city departments and the Carytown merchants to make both small and large improvements to the shopping district. Each upgrade, from street repaving to bike racks to trash cans, represent significant investment and action on behalf of our city leaders. We appreciate your leadership and encourage city government to continue reviewing the needs of other key business areas. As you continue to improve our city, as you have Carytown, we will continue to recognize you for your accomplishments.
Main Street Station :: The Richmond Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber supports GRTC Transit System’s development of a transfer center at the Main Street Center location. The development of this transfer center will achieve the goal of increasing the efficiency and availability of public transportation throughout the region. Our council sees the advancement of this inter-modal transportation facility as vital to laying the foundation for bus rapid transit, light rail, and high speed rail for the region and state, and supports these efforts.
Regional Cooperation :: The Richmond Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber would like to share its appreciation and support to the Mayor and Richmond City Council for their public displays of regional cooperation. From having Mayor Jones attend and address the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors at a recent meeting to having city council members engaged in frequent meetings and discussion with other county leaders, we applaud every effort to develop dialogue and vision that aligns our region’s leaders.
High Speed Rail :: The Richmond Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber strongly supports the development of high speed passenger rail service between Washington, DC and Richmond, and encourages Richmond City elected officials to support this effort. With $9.3 billion of the Federal Stimulus Package dedicated to expanding passenger rail capacity and grants for high-speed rail projects, Richmond leaders and the business community must act now to seek funding for passenger rail. High-speed rail linking cities and urban regions is as important to a national transportation plan as good regional mass transit. The Richmond Business Council and Greater Richmond Chamber will work with our members to ensure that local, state and federal leaders understand that linking Richmond and Washington, DC through high-speed rail is a necessity and priority for our region.
