:: IN SESSION: A Legislative Update Series

The 2010 Session of the Virginia General Assembly, the oldest continuously-operating representative body in America, convened on Wednesday, January 13 in the historic Virginia Capitol.

WEEK 1 RE-CAP
The first week of the General Assembly, typically a fairly slow week, brought with it the public airing of major budgetary differences amongst our outgoing and incoming Governors, changes to committee assignments in the House and Senate, and very little movement on actual legislative issues.  This isn’t unusual, as the real work for the General Assembly will start in earnest in the next week. > read more

:: PEOPLES INCOME TAX, INC. > Chuck McCabe

Recognized for four years as one of Richmond’s Rising 25 fastest growing private firms, Peoples Tax provides valuable tax and accounting services for individuals and small businesses in the region. Founded in Richmond in 1987 by member Chuck McCabe, Peoples has assisted more than 20,000 clients with tax returns.

Peoples CEO Chuck McCabe is committed to Richmond’s business community, having served on the board of the Greater Richmond Chamber and its numerous small business committees. He served as Chairman of the Chamber’s Education Committee and co-founded BIZ LINC, in addition to serving on the Richmond Venture Forum board as Chair of the Entrepreneur Advisory Committee. In 1991, McCabe was named SBA Virginia Small Business Advocate of the Year. He is founding Chairman of the Virginia Council of CEOs. McCabe is deeply involved in the community; he was a member of the Virginia Council on Teen Pregnancy Prevention, and served as a volunteer for the Virginia Home for Boys, Junior Achievement and the United Way. He was a founding Director and committee chair of Richmond Communities in Schools. McCabe is a 1990 graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond. In 2004, Commonwealth Catholic Charities awarded McCabe the Samuel H. Dibert Award for Community Service. McCabe has written two nationally distributed books on adult career education and he is the author of numerous published articles. His public speaking topics have included adult education, entrepreneurship and management. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member of several colleges, including the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business.

In addition to its 10 offices in metropolitan Richmond, Peoples operates a private career income tax school certified by the State Council of Higher Education (SCHEV), offering classroom and e-learning courses. The Income Tax School division, directly and through its licensees, trains more than 3,000 students each year. Peoples offers CPA tax training, charging one-half of the average fee.

In reflecting on the name of his company (often confused with a national franchise), Chuck McCabe said: “I firmly believe that our tax professionals must employ high-quality people skills. Our brand represents value-based products and excellent client service.” Regional and national organizations recognize Peoples exceptional record: the company is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating and an unblemished record. In fact, Peoples was winner of the 1999 BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Integrity. In 1994, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce named Peoples a Blue Chip Enterprise. In 1992, the Greater Richmond Chamber recognized McCabe as the primary business leader to organize Metro Richmond 2000; as a result, then-Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander named Richmond an America 2000 Community.
